Gold Karat Guide

Gold Type Stamp Gold Content Durability Best For
10K Gold 417 41.7% Very high Budget-friendly, active everyday wear
14K Gold 585 58.3% High Everyday fine jewelry, engagement rings
18K Gold 750 75.0% Medium Fine & luxury jewelry, sensitive skin
22K Gold 916 91.7% Low Traditional & cultural jewelry
24K Gold 999 99.9% Very low Investment & bullion

What Does “K” Mean?

K (Karat) measures gold purity out of 24 parts. 24K is nearly pure gold (99.9%). Lower karats mix in more alloy metals such as silver, copper, zinc, or palladium, which makes the metal harder and more affordable, but also changes its color, value, and how it wears over time.

To check the karat of your jewelry, look for the stamp (for example, “585” or “14K”) on the inside of a ring or near the clasp.

Lower Karat vs. Higher Karat

Lower karat (10K–14K)

  • Harder and more resistant to scratches and dents
  • More affordable
  • Holds gemstones securely in settings
  • Paler gold color
  • More likely to tarnish or discolor skin over time
  • Higher chance of skin reactions, due to more alloy metals
  • Lower gold value

Higher karat (18K–24K)

  • Richer, deeper gold color
  • Gentler on sensitive skin
  • Higher gold value
  • Softer; scratches and bends more easily
  • Less suited to delicate settings or heavy daily wear
  • Higher price

Gold Colors

Yellow Gold
The classic, warm gold tone. Made by mixing gold with silver and copper. It needs no plating and is the easiest color to maintain.

White Gold
Gold alloyed with white metals such as palladium, nickel, or silver, then usually plated with rhodium for a bright, mirror-like finish. The rhodium layer gradually wears off and typically needs re-plating every 1–2 years. If you have a nickel allergy, ask us for nickel-free white gold.

Rose Gold
Gold alloyed with copper (and often a little silver) for a soft, warm pink tone. The copper makes it quite durable, and the color may deepen slightly with age.

Note: Gold color does not determine gold purity. 14K Yellow Gold, 14K White Gold, and 14K Rose Gold all contain 58.3% gold.

How to Choose

  • Active lifestyle or tighter budget: 14K offers the best balance of durability and value.
  • Sensitive skin: 18K, or nickel-free alloys.
  • Rich color and lasting value: 18K or higher.
  • Investment: 24K bullion rather than jewelry.
