Bulle: The Everyday Sapphire Stud, Bezel-Set in Platinum

DANFÉE Magazine · The Edit

Every jewellery box needs one pair you never have to think about: the studs you put in on Monday and forget until Sunday. Bulle is that pair — a single drop of vivid blue sapphire held in a soft bubble of platinum, small enough to disappear into your day and bright enough to be noticed when it matters.

A drop of blue in a bubble

Bulle is French for “bubble”, and the name describes the idea exactly. A round sapphire sits inside a softly domed rim of polished platinum, so the stud reads as a smooth, rounded form with a point of colour at its centre. There are no prongs, no sharp corners and nothing to interrupt the outline — just metal and stone meeting in one clean circle, 4.5 mm across.

That softness is deliberate. A bubble suggests something light and effortless, and Bulle is meant to be worn the same way: without ceremony, every day, alongside whatever else you happen to be wearing — reading glasses, a cashmere knit, a work bag on your shoulder.

The bezel: the oldest way to hold a stone

Long before prongs lifted gems into the light, jewellers held them in a bezel — a thin wall of metal pressed over the edge of the stone. It is one of the oldest setting techniques there is, and it has never gone out of use, because it does two things exceptionally well: it protects the stone, and it gives the jewel a smooth, continuous outline.

Bulle uses a full bezel, meaning the platinum wraps the entire girdle of the sapphire. Every edge of the stone is covered, so it is shielded from knocks, and there are no prong tips to snag on hair, scarves or knitwear. It is the most practical choice for an earring you intend to sleep in, travel in and simply live in.

Wrapped and protected

  • Metal surrounds the whole stone
  • Smooth outline, nothing to catch
  • A soft, modern, graphic look
  • The colour framed by a ring of white

Lifted and open

  • Small prongs hold the stone at points
  • More light enters from the sides
  • Prong tips can catch on fabric
  • A more traditional, sparkling look
A bezel does not compete with the stone. It draws a quiet line around it, and lets the colour do the talking.

Why platinum

Bulle is made in PT950 platinum, which is 95% pure platinum. Unlike white gold, which is often finished with a bright rhodium plating, platinum is naturally white all the way through. It keeps its colour without re-plating, and over years of wear it softens to a gentle satin sheen that many people come to love.

Platinum is also dense and durable, which suits a bezel well: the rim holds its shape and keeps the stone secure. And because it is so pure, it is a popular choice for people whose skin is sensitive to some other metals. Next to sapphire, its cool white tone makes the blue look clean and bright rather than warm.

Vivid Blue, eye-clean

Where a deep royal blue can turn dark and velvety in dim light, Vivid Blue stays bright. It is a lively, saturated blue that holds its colour under office lighting, on a grey afternoon and in the glow of a screen — which makes it ideal for a stud you wear from morning to night. The stones are round brilliant cut, so the facets keep returning light to the eye even at this small scale, and they are graded eye-clean: no inclusions are visible without magnification.

Each sapphire is cut from natural rough sourced in Sri Lanka and Madagascar, two origins known for clear, lively blues. Sapphire itself is corundum, second only to diamond in hardness, so it is well suited to jewellery worn every single day.

Small on purpose

At 4.5 mm, Bulle is a true everyday size: visible across a table, discreet across a room. The pair weighs about 1.2 grams in total, so the studs sit flat on the lobe without pulling, and the smooth bezel back is comfortable enough to leave in overnight.

  • Double-grooved PT950 posts. Two grooves give the butterfly backs a secure hold, so they stay put through a busy day.
  • Butterfly push backs. Simple and quick, with nothing to screw or hinge.
  • A second-piercing size. Small enough to pair with a larger earring below, or to wear alone higher up the ear.

Three ways to wear Bulle

At the desk

With glasses and knitwear

A cream knit and fine metal frames keep the palette soft. The single point of blue at the ear echoes cool lens reflections and lifts the whole face.

In a stack

In a second piercing

Wear Bulle above a hoop or a drop for a curated ear. Its round outline balances longer shapes beneath it.

For him

As a single stud

Bulle is designed to be unisex. One stud in platinum and blue is a refined alternative to a plain metal ball or a diamond.

Who it suits, and when to give it

If they… Why Bulle works
Want jewellery they never take off Full bezel, no prongs to snag, light enough to sleep in
Have sensitive skin 95% platinum, naturally white without plating
Are buying a first fine-jewellery piece A classic stud in a precious metal and a natural gem
Are shopping for him A unisex design that reads understated and modern
Were born in September Sapphire is the September birthstone
Are marking a milestone Graduations, first jobs, anniversaries, or a “something blue” on the wedding day

Studs are among the easiest fine-jewellery gifts to get right: no sizing, no chain length, and a design that suits almost every age and style. For help choosing a shade and metal, read our sapphire buying guide. If you prefer a longer line of colour, see our story on the Courbe half-hoop earrings.

Documented by an independent laboratory

Every pair of Bulle studs comes with its own report from an independent gemmological laboratory, GRC or NGTC, confirming the identity of the sapphires. You can look up the report number on our certificate verification page, and our guide to reading a GRC sapphire report explains each field.

Care in brief: clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush, then dry thoroughly. Put your studs in after perfume and hairspray, take them out for swimming, sport and household chemicals, and store them in a soft pouch apart from other pieces. Platinum develops a soft patina over time; any jeweller can repolish it to a high shine whenever you like.
